Meta’s projects to impress

Gdick returned to Meta. Facebook’s parent company has unveiled Orion, an augmented reality glasses project that relies on no less than seven cameras to take into account the user’s environment, but also to deliver information in the form of holograms. With this prototype capable of detecting eye and hand movements, will Meta succeed where Google, with its glasses that were considered too intrusive, failed to convince in 2012?

Another effort, the parent company of Facebook just unveiled Movie Gen, a tool “text-to-video” also still in the state of research. Compared in some aspects to the Sora software launched by its competitor OpenAI, Movie Gen promises to produce sixteen second videos in 1080p from a simple text command.

Movie Gen should also be able to generate music or sound effects in sync with video content. Want to celebrate your best friend’s birthday by making a clip of him, dressed up, swimming next to a magnificent hippopotamus? This will soon be possible, provided copyright is respected – Meta explains that it has trained Movie Gen on a set of “licensed and publicly available data” – like the ego of the person you want to please…

A watch with great care

Thinner and lighter: Ten years after its creation, the Apple Watch has a new look. Not only the ultra version, which has more accurate GPS, is aimed at adventurers, but especially the “classic” model: the thickness of the Apple Watch Series 10 (photo) goes from 10.7 to 9.7 mm and is now available in aluminium, steel and titanium. If the autonomy of this watch, which allows it to last more than a day, changes little, its recharging is faster and its partnership with Hermès has given rise to a dedicated case and bracelet.

But apart from finer performance in heart rate detection, which can give rise to atrial fibrillation alarms, as is the case with the ScanWatch 2 from Withings, it is mainly for the detection of sleep apnea currently available across the Atlantic that this watch offers the greatest promise. Using the accelerometer, it identifies subtle wrist movements associated with a disruption in normal breathing rates. After thirty days, the Apple Watch Series 10 alerts the user if there are signs of possible moderate to severe sleep apnea. This will allow him to talk to a doctor and get treatment if needed.

Custom racing car for champion

The record for the greatest distance covered in one hour on a hand bike was taken by the Japanese paracyclist Kazuhiko Kanno. On October 3, it covered 28 km and 331 m, on the Longchamp cycling circuit, in the Bois de Boulogne park, in Paris. Dassault Systèmes, the French software publisher, used the virtual twin technique in which it excels to produce a customized car whose performance, praised by Laurent Jalabert, is now listed in the Guinness World Records.
